I had a male friend ask me what the big deal was about Max. I, of course, couldn’t believe that he even fixed his mouth to ask the question and proceeded to chew him out. How could you not love this?

But then again, Max doesn’t sing for the mens. He sings to us ladies…his music is sex on wax. It is cooing and sensual and gives us the picture of how we want our man to be. Even when he’s breaking up with us, he’s sensitive and charming…he’s the type of dude that you spend the rest of your life wondering what could have been.

I personally like the wild and free Maxwell; this new clean-cut, suit wearing Maxwell doesn’t sit well with me. When he was the Maxwell with the hair and bohemian appearance, he had an air of mystery about him. Now that he’s cleaned up, he looks like everyone else. ::sigh:: But as long as the music keeps coming, I’ll deal with it because, in the end, that’s what it really boils down to, right?

The music…

Happy Monday! I’m feeling John Mayer this week. I loved his new CD Battle Studies before its release, and now that I’ve listened to it fifty-eleven times, I love it even more. This is a repeat post, (originally posted in March 2008) because it perfectly describes how I feel…included are my favorite JM songs:

I have a thing…I heard this song, sung by this voice, and fell instantly in love:

If you listen closely, the words say that daughters learn how to love the way they are loved. True…broken people lead to broken relationships. So it’s not only this heavenly voice, it’s also a soul that thinks and feels and somehow is able to put his finger on just the right pulse of things. There are only a few artists that can sing me to sleep; JM is one of them…

And then, as my love continues to blossom for him, I discover that he has a sense of humor. One night, as I am watching the Dave Chappelle Show, I see him hanging out with Dave, with his guitar, trying to prove the point that white people can’t dance and it’s the guitar that is the underlying reason…hilarious! He makes frequent stand-up appearances at a comedy spot in New York, and operates a blog (!!) that I read on the regular…

After I wore out “Heavier Things” (the CD that contains “Daughters“), I moved on to JM’s ”Continuum.” This CD is chock full of jewels: “Waiting On The World To Change,” ”Gravity,” ” “I’m Gonna Find Another You,” and this, my favorite…

That song puts me in the mind of thinking that even though there are things against you, you must always pull forward…it’s so soulful and powerful, yet so simple and honest…it just blows me away every time I hear it…I feel like I should be in New Orleans in a small smoky club with a Long Island Iced Tea in front of me, along with lots of seafood and hot sauce somewhere nearby…

Last but not least, “Slow Dancing In A Burning Room“…(((deep sigh)))

This man…I don’t know where he got it from, but he has a musical ear that is uncanny. He acknowledges that he is a student of music; I say that he has learned well…

It’s all love… Kisses

There are only a few celebrities/artists/icons that I love. And by love, I mean in the sense that I deeply feel affection for this person, that if they were anywhere near me, that I would feel protective and want to shield them from whatever hurts and pains that I could. It is not a physical love or lust, it is a deep, affectionate feeling that I share something with them, that on some level I have connected with them somewhere, somehow, some way.

I feel that way about Luther. And Prince. And Jill. And Pac.

Today is Pac’s birthday. He would have been 38. And even though he was older than me, I still felt like an older sister to him. Because he reminded me so of my little brother. His machismo, always on display. His exterior, rough and edgy. If you didn’t know better, he could scare you. His words drove daggers into you because they spoke the truth. But take one look into those big beautiful eyes and you could see the soul of someone who loved his people, his neighborhoods, his heritage. You could never take that away from him, and you could never deny the talent that raged through his soul. Even if you don’t consider him the best, you must admit that he is one of the best to ever lay down a lyric.

I leave you with some of my favorites. Among them, one of the most poignant cuts I have ever heard. And that is true even still today.

You couldn’t possibly believe that I would let His Royal Badness’s birthday pass without some acknowledgement, did you? Yesterday, The Purple One turned 51 and from what I can tell, he is still as brilliant as he was when he hit the scene at 19. He is like the finest of wines, only getting better with age. Of course, pure musical talent usually does. That pseudo-rivalry between Michael Jackson and Prince? I hopped so fast off of the Michael Jackson bus it would have caused you to sprain your neck. There was something wanton, something forbidden, something utterly decadent about Prince that attracted me and kept me wanting more and more. I will always believe that Michael Jackson was the better entertainer…but Prince? The better musician.

I could go on and on, but instead, I will share with you my three (!) favorite tunes by this genius. It was hard, and incredibly difficult, but there is always one song that ends up in the top three…can you guess which one? LOL…

seal

There is a magnetism about Seal that is…captivating. I can feel him through his music, which in turn makes him incredibly sexy to me. He is one of those artists that snuck up on me, and I’ve been intrigued with him since I first heard his version of “Hey Joe“…but the song that made me fall head over heels? This one…

This may sound strange, but I love to look at Seal. For me, the scars on his face symbolize his character, his story. I know about his illness, and the story behind what caused the scars, and his hair loss. It doesn’t make him unattractive at all…it makes him interesting. I totally see why Heidi Klum fell for him. Totally.

Back to the music. With every new Seal release, I’m brought more into his fray of admirers. You see, I think I’ve mentioned before that I am a sucker for a man with a voice. Especially if he knows how to use that voice. Seal has one of those voices that creeps into your ears, and makes love to your brain…it requires that you listen with your mind, all the while that voice is entering into other parts of your body, melting them, making them vulnerable for…well, whatever. I like that. There are only a handful of artists that fit into this category for me…he is one.

I also happen to like music that makes me break into a smile when i hear it. When Seal released his Soul CD, I was instantly beguiled because here was one of my favorite singers, singing classic songs that I loved. There was not one ounce of “I hope he doesn’t butcher them” because I knew he was fully capable of pulling this off. I share with you one of my favorites from this CD. It is truly a classic, and he does Curtis Mayfield proud, I think…

If you’ve never bothered to listen to a Seal song, do yourself a favor and do so. You will be pleased.
