There is so much new music this week that I had to choose which one to post…that’s a first.

My choice? Whitney Houston.

Ah…Ms. Whitney. I am championing hard for Nippy…and I see pictures of her and I see her looking robust and healthy and my heart fills with hope. You see, I used to idolize this woman. I mean, who didn’t want to sing like Whitney? She had, what my friend’s father used to say, a “bird” in her voice. Sweet and pure as snow, yet powerful and soul-stirring…that was Ms. Whitney’s voice.

Now, that voice is a shade of what it used to be. At least on the tracks on this CD, her voice does not equal what it used to. I tried to listen to the CD and not compare it to the old Whitney…you know, the “You Give Good Love” Whitney…but it was fruitless. I keep looking for that bird, and where it was always there, it only shows up now and again here.

That is not to say that we should not celebrate her renewal. We should, and I will. There are some tunes here that I like, but there are some that are simply unforgivable. How…why do you do Donny Hathaway’s “A Song For You” like that? It is a travesty, and almost ruined the whole CD for me. And I’m not even going to talk about that track with Akon (why do people still record with him?). But I stuck with it, because Whitney deserves a chance to sing her way back into my life. The lead single, “I Look To You” is a look inside the heart of a woman that was once untouchable.

Whitney Houston fell down to earth, and is climbing her way back out of the abyss that holds her demons. For that reason, I will continue to support her. It’s almost blasphemous to say you don’t like this CD…so I won’t even go there. But I will say that it only makes me reminisce on what was once was, and wish it were still.

Recommendation: I Look To You is worth at least one listen…you will find something here to like, but not love.

Peace and blessings…

  • I forgot to give you the link to my OSF for this week - duh, if my head weren't attached..... like my mother used to say, lol.

Here 'tis: Going Steady in the Sixties - Happy Together
  • I heard that her tv comeback show was a disappointment too - I didn't hear it or see it. But Whitney has a voice and she will find it and I hope she doens't get torn to shreds by the celebrity dissing monsters out there.

I'm also confused about where to find your OSF for today (9-4) so stop by mine and add a link!
  • Although I was never a big Whitney Houston fan, I was happy when it was reported that she was working on a comeback CD. When Whitney's life hit the skids, a lot of people piled on and I didn't like the way she was being kicked while down. I received a copy of her new CD and it's not bad. My favorite songs are "Million Dollar Bill", "For the Lovers", and the title track.
  • I went to the website to give it a listen and I must say I am so very disappointed. But I do give Whit an E for effort, I think this comeback was a hard one for her because we tend to be our own biggest critics.
I do not like the cd and will not buy it, but I wish her all the best...
from the time she came out I was a fan,
    You give good love,
Saving all my love for you
    heartbreak hotel
    run to you
    where do broken hearts go
    greatest love of all
    I have nothing
    I will always love you...

Sorry Marva, I can not in good consciousness buy this new farce of a cd...
  • Ms. Regina,

    Notice I didn't say "buy"...I said listen...

I have listened to the CD a couple of times and remain disappointed. I
watched her on GMA and almost cried...it was so heartbreaking to hear her
    voice so broken...

But I still have hope that she can pull it together...Oprah sent out a tweet
that said she "blew the roof" off of Harpo studios...I'm sure it was with
the aid of some tracks, but I'll watch and cry with everyone else...
  • Marva, I didn't watch the GMA but I did catch the video on the internet Since everyone (including the morning radio show) was talking about it and aside from how she sounded she looked happy and healthy and her energy level was off the chart. So she appeared to feel good being out there again, so maybe that will encourage her to keep working on getting that voice better.
    We'll see!
