Welcome to OSF! I have only two words for you…Luther. Vandross.

First, the original, sung by the Carpenters:

Then, Luther makes it his own…

  • Guuurl, wic - ked. You are good, I wouldn't have been able to pick one song from Luther. The man was a cover king!

    Happy OSF! :)
  • I enjoy remakes like this much better than the "note for note" ones. I remember how amazed I was when I found out that the versions of "Superstar" by The Carpenters and Luther were the same song.
  • You're going to make me late for work sitting here listening to Luther.
    I really miss him.

    Great choices!

    Happy OSF to ya!
  • I didn't even know the song was a remake.
I thought Luther owned that song. . .well he still does.

    Have a good weekend.
  • Pamella
I love both the original and the remake of this song. Good job. Happy OSF!
  • Ditto on Sharon's comment. It was a long time before I found out Luther did so many remakes. But, he's definitely an artist who made the song his own.
  • Luther has a way of doing remakes that will cause you to forget about the original.
  • It says a lot when the remake takes the prize - Luther was an original in every way.

After I saw the theme this week I did some trolling for Beatles remakes (yeah, I was bein' lazy - not too hard to find, lol!)

Now what I want to know is: Just how many remakes of Helter Skelter are there?
  • Happy OSF! Ditto Sharon! Who would have known?
  • I actually like the Carpenters version a lot, except when it gets to the chorus. She should have just went solo on the lyrics.

But, no one can do it like Luther. When I hear. "Long Ago"... I still get chills, and my mood is transformed. Love that song by Luther.
  • I am a fan of both artists. Both had a unique quality and a recognizable sound. Both Karen and Luther are missed—they were too young, but their gift lives on!
  • Kim
I never heard the Carpenter's version They did a good job, but Luther killed it!
  • Wonderful theme and even better choices. I was a Carpenter's fan. Knew most of their songs, but I'm also a Luther van and his version has been known to make me cry. :-)
  • Hey Marvalus!

Well you definitely selected one of the best examples around, no doubt. The Carpenters were a good group, and Karen Carpenter had an absolutely beautiful voice as your video shows, but man when Luther got hold to that song...? And it's not just his voice really is quite strong as well, but it's the arrangement too.

    Great pic!
  • I'm not much of a Luther fan, but this is the only song of his that I truly like. I was actually listening to this earlier this week. I love Karen Carpenter's voice and wish she would have lived longer so we could see where her career would have gone.

WOW! I knew that "Superstar was a remake, but I didn't know that The Carpenters sang the original!
  • That's right. They sure did make that song first. I completely forgot. Luther did it so well...

As they say... It's not who does it first but who does it best.
  • That song is so haunting anyway it is hard to go wrong, hut Luther does it down. It makes me sad this song but it like a necessary sadness.
  • SjP
Oh my! I had completely forgotten that the Carpenters made it first! Can't nobody do like Luther did it!
  • I always have loved both versions but Luther just does something to a song that no one can compare to!
  • There is no contest here because this is my all time favorite Luther song EVER. And that's saying a lot! Nice pick.
  • where you is?
  • Villager
    God Bless You!

I invite your blog readers to a reminder that we are never alone through the musical scripture of Al Green on my Sunday Inspirations meme entry this week.
