I hesitated writing this post, because it tore right through to the core of me. I watched the video and couldn’t watch until the end, at first. Because I knew the ending. I could visually see in my mind what the witnesses there saw, and I couldn’t watch. But I also couldn’t stay away. So I watched a second and third time, each time being slapped in the face with the reality of the world and the injustices and either sheer ignorance or utter disregard of human life by the police officer. No matter which it is, the end result remains a tragedy.

I don’t want to talk about the crime here (the crime of murder, let’s just get that clear)…no, I want to talk about life. Every story that I’ve read has some insensitive fools who comment about this person who lost his life like he was nothing. But this man was someone’s son, someone’s brother, someone’s father…and despite what his past held, there were people who prayed for him and who were watching him perhaps change his life into someone who didn’t deserve to be shot in the back and treated like he was.

I’m not going to post the video here; I just can’t. I’m sure that you have seen it and if you haven’t, go to YouTube to find it. And watch and form your own opinion. And if you see anything other than a restrained man, laying face down on the concrete, shot in the back…then you are blind in one eye and not willing to see in the other.

It doesn’t matter what kind of life this man led…what does matter is the kind of life he won’t get to live.

Update: I received an e-mail from a young man named Neil Rodriguez. He has posted a story on Huffington Post where he is updating the story constantly. Please go here to read, and to watch his video response to this shameful tragedy.

  • It is times like these, Manchild, that I truly remember who God is and what he can do. I know many people have trouble believing when things like this happen, but there is a distinguishable difference between the will of God, and the will of man.
  • Hello Marvalus,

Well said. Well done. We have much to do this year. But God ....

As you know, "impossible" ain't nothing but a word to those of us who honestly believe that all things are possible through Christ who strengthens us.

  • I agree, D...
  • Mine too, MsLadyDeborah...and I'm in the angry stage right now also.

I don't know why I even bother to read the comments...people use the internet because they can remain nameless and faceless and say whatever they want and suffer no recrimination for being insensitive jerks...
  • This particular story brought tears to my eyes when I viewed the incident.
    Then I got angry.

I am always amazed at how calloused people can be during moments like this. I have read some comments that have caused me to cringe. Simply because the writer lacks the common decency to consider that this was somebody who was loved by others.

I refused to watch it. I knew the outcomes as well. We see it more and more. Black life isn't valued very much. It's heartbreaking. Black folk have to come together more, love each other more and realize we are in this together. We can only fight this institutionalized racism together.
  • I agree with you Melissa...something needs to be done. Even here in the Midwest, I am willing to do something, anything to lend my time and effort to bring justice to this situation.
  • It really is shameless, AJ...
  • I read your post, IW...and remember your own recount and shed a few tears at the low that this has us all at. This man, his life...just gone. For what?
  • It was absolutely horrific to watch...I don't watch the news; I in fact keep up with things by doing this blog and reading others...this situation tears me apart...

I think we should organize a boycott of BART for the same length of time it takes them to arrest the person they employed to murder Oscar Grant. I would suspect the revenue supports the salaries of the killers they employ. Why would we continue to pay their salary when they are killing innocent citizens? I also believe BART is a government agency so why would we continue to knowingly give money to the same people who are doing nothing to ensure this murderer is locked up.

Praying for his family and friends. This is so senseless.
  • Wonderfully said, sis. Amazing post. I just posted about this crazy bulls**t myself....
  • I'm in the dark about this because I don't keep up with the news and very busy in my own world with a preschooler. Nevertheless, that could be a good thing these days! I did find many videos to choose from on YouTube, but couldn't finish until the end. I can't imagine actually witnessing it.
