earthakitt

She has been on my list for Icons for a long time, and when I stopped writing this post, I would look at her name and think, “I need to write something about Ms. Eartha.” How sad that I have waited until she has passed away to honor her with this posting, as I heard about her death when I returned home from my Christmas festivities today. Ms. Eartha was a Phenomenal Woman in every sense of the word, and defined what a “sex kitten” should be.

Once called “the most exciting woman in the world” by Orson Welles, Eartha Kitt was born on January 17, 1927. She began her career as a member of the Katherine Dunham Company and also showed her singing talents with recordings of hit records such as “C’est si bon” and the Christmas staple, “Santa Baby.” I have always been intrigued by Ms. Eartha…partially because she always spoke with an air of sophistication and her voice carried such sultriness. Her whole demeanor exuded sexiness, as evidenced in the clip below:

Ms. Eartha’s sexiness was not something that she had to put on everyday; no, this was something that was innate…something that was deep and buried within her that simply flowed through her pores like the air that she breathed. Take her role of Catwoman, for example. The way she played Catwoman had a whole lot of mischief, along with an attitude of va-va-vavoom that brought you in and held you to the screen whenever she was on it.

To those of us who were not familiar with her during her cabaret performances, it was her role as Lady Eloise in the Eddie Murphy movie, “Boomerang” that made us pay attention to her and want to know more about her. Watching her vamp it up as the cougar-like owner of the cosmetics company involved with Eddie Murphy’s company is absolutely hilarious.

Ms. Eartha is an Icon because she was who she was, effortlessly. She stepped into her womanhood proudly, and that is always to be admired.

  • The "it" factor...that is definitely the correct statement, Rev...
  • She sure is an Icon. I'm happy to have seen her up close and personal. She had a great energy about her.
  • Eartha had the "it" factor as you said, Her sexy appeal was innate and not forced but permeated her entire being, her essence. She can not be replaced or duplicated and will be missed.
