Happy Saturday! I hope that everyone had a fabulous Thanksgiving and that you all got your fill of turkey, macaroni and cheese, sweet potatoes, and collard greens!

Let’s do this, shall we?

10 – Black Friday

In a time long since past, I was one of those folks who set the alarm and woke up to be at the Walmart or the Best Buy before the crack of dawn. My aunties and I would coordinate a schedule of stores that we would hit on Black Friday, and usually spent the entire day in the car, running from one store to the next. I admit, we got some great deals and have equipped our homes and gotten some wonderful toys for the children in our family by these early morning runs. The sheer tiredness that we would be overwhelmed with eventually won out, and we stopped these runs, deciding that our sanity was more important than saving 100 bucks on a television or DVD player.

So when I hear of stories like a Walmart worker getting stomped to death in Long Island, NY, and two people shot at a Toys ‘R Us in Palm Desert, CA, I am saddened. Saddened because it doesn’t have to be this. Saddened because commercialism and the allure of saving a buck on a plasma TV has overcome what the meaning of this holiday season truly means. And at that NY Walmart, the folks rushed in and trampled that man and kept shopping as he lay on the floor, dying. Is it really that serious? Where has our compassion gone? Where has the humanity disappeared to?

9 – Hell To The Naw!

There is a rumor going around that Whitney and Bobby have reunited. The rumor has even gone so far to say that the couple has been seen around Georgia “looking romantic.” What the hell does that mean? Did they have dinner together? Were they walking to the car and they hugged? Or maybe he leaned over and gave her a kiss on the cheek as they departed company? I swear I hate the media…

Whitney immediately put out a statement denying the rumors by way of her publicist, calling the speculation “a complete fabrication.” Well, at least that…

8 – Role Models

In an article on MSNBC.com, Barack and Michelle Obama are being painted as the new role models for relationships. I must admit that I look at them and smile, but I don’t want to put them in a bubble. I don’t want to call them perfect, because I think that would be an insult to them. They are a married couple who I’m sure have to work hard at sustaining their marriage just like everyone else. I’m sure they have had ups and downs and arguments just like everyone else. Of course, there is much to be said about their commitment to each other, and the affection and love that you can plainly see when the two are together (and for that matter, apart), and I admire that. It’s not a bad thing they are being labeled as relationship role models; but I think people have to have realistic views. Both Michelle and Barack were and are their own people who bring 100% to this relationship. You can look at them and want to have a love like that, but you have to take a look at yourself and work on you before you can get there.

7 – Plaxico, Plaxico, Plaxico

Plaxico Burress, of the New York Football Giants, accidentally shot himself in the leg while at a nightclub last night. Apparently he was trying to take the bullets out of the gun and shot himself in the thigh. This dude…

Sharon @ The True Urban Queen – Because she is perhaps the realest blogger I’ve ever read.

3 – Jilly From Philly

Another rumor…this time, that Jill Scott is pregnant with her first child. Remember that she is engaged/married to the drummer in her band, Lil’ Jon Roberts? After reading several of the comments left on different articles reporting this, you would think that folks have a personal stake in what goes on in Ms. Jill’s life. Who are we to decide when is too soon for her to move on with her life and fall in love again? That is entirely up to her! I love Jill (“she is me, I am her”) but this is one area that I am not going to touch. I can only be happy for her and continue to support her artistry and music.

2 – CNN Heroes

I was up at midnight last night, watching the CNN special, CNN Heroes. There were some remarkable stories highlighted, about regular people who are doing extraordinary things. It just goes to show you that we all have a purpose in life and I think if we are called to serve, then we must act upon it. One of the people highlighted was Anne Mahlum. She started a program, “Back On My Feet” in Philadelphia where she takes homeless people running. But it is so much more than that. She used to spend her time running past the homeless folks but one morning stopped and decided to help them. The Back On My Feet program has a job training program and really is a support group for folks to motivate themselves to do better.

It is stories like this one that makes me realize that humanity, however small it may be, still lives inside of some people. How easy it is for us to walk past and ignore the less fortunate, but this young lady, by doing something that she was already doing, has changed people’s lives. That is highly commendable.

  • First I want to say Happy Belated Turkey Day...(I enjoyed my holiday even though I am a vegetarian) The collards were on point :)..
Black Friday..it's wayyyyy out of hand..I have attended a few of the black friday shopping sprees..but when people start to loose their lives because of someone wanting to save a few bucks..I'm speechlees..
There was also a woman who was pregnant and got knocked down and lost her baby..This is terrible..
I love me some Jill Scott too...who said there was a specific time span that you need to adhere to before u can move on after you've ended your marriage...Once u know what it's like to feel real love u miss it..life must go on..I just wish her much happiness.
  • Marvalus
    Mike -

    10 - And they should!

    9 -

    6 - Yeah...I know...

    3 - I sure hope not...

    Lina - Same to you!

I refuse Black Friday...I don't need the craziness!
  • I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving.

#10 I missed the news this weekend. This is so disturbing and sad. Trample a man to death over. . .What? What was in there worth a man's life?

#8 I know every couple has their problems and trials. But, I do admire the Obamas. And I tend to tell people I want that type of love.
But, you are right I have to work on me and worry about what I got to offer.

And you do deserve your awards. Congrats to you.
    Thank you for mine.
    I am always honored.
  • Cheers Miss Marva! I hope you had a wonderful holiday. I've never been a big Benet fan though his voice is beautiful.

I can't even bear to think about Bobby and Whitney. Contrast them with the Obama's and it gets really ugly. I agree w/you on keeping perspective on the new PE and Michelle.
  • DB
wow Plaxico is such an ass. this cat has no maturity what so ever.

let Bobby and Whitney do their thing. he's probably still been hitting that since they split up anyway.

i don't do Black Friday...you see something you like and get to the store and realize that they only had 4 of them. i'm straight.

like the new layout by the way.
  • 10. Yet another reason I am sour on Black Friday. One blogger used this tragedy as an opportunity to write a post about the dangers of not having crowd control when dealing with low-income Blacks. I was tempted to ignore him, but I couldn't let his foolishness slide without saying something. Here is the link in case you want to read it.

    http://plancksconstant.org/blog1/2008/11/contro...

    9. If Whitney and Bobby do reunite, it makes no difference to me. It sounds like they just might be on friendly terms. Either way, I wish them well.

By the way, congrats on your two awards.
  • Marvalus
Sharon - I had a wonderful Thanksgiving...I hope yours was great too!

    10 - That's exactly the same question I asked myself...what is worth a man's life inside Walmart?

    8 - I admire them too...but I know I'm far from finding my Barack...

    Thank you...and you are welcome!
  • Marvalus
Danielle - Same to you! I've just been mesmerized lately by that silky voice of Mr. Benet's...::sigh::
  • Marvalus
DB - I wouldn't even be surprised to know that Bobby was tapping that...not surprised at all...

Thanks...I think I will keep this one for a while...
  • Marvalus
Malcolm - I visited that link...it kills me when people say they aren't racists but insist on labeling all people of a certain class a certain way...if that isn't prejudice, then what is?

I know that we all can have our hearts hardened by experiences in life; and even if this dude has "many black friends" and whatnot, he doesn't even realize that he's harboring some prejudice in his heart...and that is what's sad...
  • vivrant_thang
First, many thanks for yet another award from you! You spoil me :) And nice new digs. You're always changing things up around here!

I am so disgusted with humanity for that Walmart incident. And then just to walk over the guy while they are trying to revive him. Despicable. And then to hear that a pregnant woman miscarried. I mean, really.

In Liz Mundy's bio on Michelle, she talks about how they went through a really rough patch in their relationship but they got through it. I guess I look to that as a model, how to not give up in the darkest hours. How to fight for the relationship. I do hope that it stimulates more discourse and ACTION on the black love and relationship crisis (such as it were).

As for Jill, it's none of our business. And I know she would say as much. LOL! Not a choice I would make - which to clarify for those that aren't aware - to marry a man with 3 other kids by 3 baby mommas. But who cares what I think. As long as my tax dollars aren't paying for the crumbsnatcher!

I'm not even going to bother to write another post on these ignorant athletes getting mixed up in mess. *sucks teeth in disgust*
  • Thank you so much for my award lady!! :) ***black woman blushing***

You are most definitely on an Eric Benet kick and girl, I am NOT mad at ya!

I agree with you wholeheartedly about the role model position that Michelle and Barack are being set into. I love their relationship and I have been singing it from the mountain tops. It is so precious and defining, that it has moved me to tears. However, I refuse to let society pigeon hole their love. We all know what happens once we place someone on a pedestal. One wrong move and we are not too forgiving about the fact that we are human and make mistakes. Relationships are about learning from our mistakes and making the love stronger. Be it a friendship, courtship or whatever it may be. Anyway enough preaching, I could go on and on...lol My point is - I concur. :)
  • Mike -

    10 - And they should!

    9 - :)-

    6 - Yeah...I know...

    3 - I sure hope not...
  • Lina - Same to you!

I refuse Black Friday...I don't need the craziness!
  • Viv - You are always welcome!

I know (the Walmart thing)...it is truly disgusting...Malcolm hipped me to a link where the author said that because it was a group of lower class blacks, that this type of thing should have been expected...ain't that some shit?!

You are so right about Jill...I ain't touching that...I wish her well!
  • TC - You are very welcome!

Eric has me in a mood around here girl...ooh, chile!

Barack and Michelle, I think, give us something to emulate...but only if we understand that it takes WORK to get there. They didn't just wake up and arrive at this point.
  • Hello Marvalus,

Thank you so much for your kind words and for honoring me with a Superior Scribbler Award. Congratulations to you and to the rest of the recipients!

    Manchild
  • I was saddened to hear about the Wal-Mart tragedy. How is that possible that you don't know you're stepping on someone?

Whitney and Bobby, again?! I'm not sure if that's a cool move. People start prayin'!

Congratulations to Jill if she is. I did not know about the daddy and his other children. Has he truly converted to commit, or is after something else. Either way, she will be all right if things change.
