Powerful…that’s the word that comes to mind when I watch Venus and/or Serena play their game. Mind you, I only occasionally watched tennis before the Williams sisters arrived on the scene, and I periodically watch it now…but when I do, you better believe that one of these sisters are involved.

It is almost fiendish watching them; the intensity, the wild moans and mutterings, and the sheer control of the court all lends to the excitement. Serena has won eight Grand Slam singles titles and an Olympic Gold medal in doubles. She is known for her out of the norm outfits on the court, but is perhaps better known for knocking the ball across the court so fast that you almost cannot see it. This girl is bad. She is built like a “brick shit house,” as my granny would say, and is so strong that it should be against the law. Maybe that is where the hate comes in. She is not the norm. But she dominates, when she is healthy and keeps herself in condition.

Venus is tall and lanky (all legs), but just as powerful. Her serves are dangerous; she set the record for the fastest serve (129mph!) and it has only been tied by one other person (guess who?). Venus is more poetic in her moves…she is graceful and poetic as she moves across the court. I watched her match today and was awed by her ability to keep her head in the game. She has won 14 Grand Slam titles—6 singles, 6 doubles, and 2 mixed doubles.

Both ladies have extended their influence into fashion…Serena with her Anares line, and Venus with her EleVen line. These ladies are Icons because of their fierce competitive spirit, and their undeniable love for what they do. That, and the fact they add to the list of women that prove to young girls that you can do and be whatever you want.

  • I haven't had a chance to catch tennis this time around because of the work schedule. But you're right in all that you have said. Watching these two people do their thing is simply amazing. They really put their heart into it.
  • I love Venus and Serena! It's no fun watching tennis without them in tournaments. And I'm so glad they're focused this Wimbledon. They may in fact do it again and end up playing each other in the finals. How awesome to see these beautiful sisters doing as well as they are again.

I love how those ladies have been so successful for so long. And have been role models all the way through their careers.
  • It's amazing how two sisters can get along so well and yet compete at the same time.
