OK, I said I wasn’t going to watch, but I couldn’t find anything else on. So I slid over to SoulBounce and joined in on some live-blogging fun and settled in for some of the worse f*ckery I’ve seen in my life! I’m not going to go into extreme detail here, but I will hit some of the things that I saw that either hurt my eyes, or renewed my belief (on BET?!) in music.

First up, there was Usher. He has lost something…his swag, some of his sex appeal, something…his performance was lame. He lip-synched through the whole thing and even his choreography was…eh.

They couldn’t get a better host than D. L. Hughley? From his lame jokes to calling Marvin Sapp “Warren Sapp,” it was downhill from the beginning.

If Terrence Howard stuck to playing the guitar, he would be alright. But occasionally he has to open his mouth…

Um, is Cuba Gooding, Jr. Black? Who told him he could come?

I loved, loved, loved the 90’s girl groups up there with Ms. Alicia Keys. SWV sure looks different…sometimes you just have to say no to a dress…that is all. I think I wept a bit at T-Boz and Chili without Left Eye…

I certainly enjoyed Big Boi and Luda…I don’t like the fact that they had to be a part of that freak show put on by T-Pain, but hey, whatever…

A little gospel music ain’t never hurt nobody…Warren Marvin Sapp laid it down…good stuff.

The absolute best portion of the show: the Al Green tribute. Jill Scott, Anthony Hamilton, and brace yourself…MAXWELL!!!! He lives and breathes and he was “Simply Beautiful!” Oh, I think I forgot how to breathe for a couple of moments, and I think I may have blacked out, but only after he left the stage. I didn’t want to miss a minute of him gracing us with his presence. Now, I need that CD!!!

What I loved most was the fact that when Big Al took the stage, everybody, and I do mean everybody, was up and out of their seats, singing and dancing in the aisles…it was a beautiful sight!

Everything after that was a blur. I was still in Maxwell euphoria and barely noticed anything else…

Did you watch this show? What did you think?

  • I missed it, so I really appreciate your recap. I want to see the 90's girls flashback and the Al Green tribute.

@MrsGrapevine - The 90's flashback was good...but the Al Green tribute? AWESOME!! I think it was the best part...hugely because of Maxwell...I'm sure BET will run the show into the grounds in re-airs, so you'll get to see it soon...
  • I didn't even know it was on. BET is so off my radar I totally forgot. I read the post over at Soulbounce and LMAO.

I think my daughter said it best during the pre-show when BIC and Soulja Boy performed--- "What's That?" Out of the mouths of babes.....
  • I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVED The Al Green TRIBUTE.

My mom raised me up on that man. So, the memories are bittersweet. I remember seeing him in concert and I was one of the youngest people up and singing along with him, with his shiny, gold suit on. I love him! Followed by Mr. Sapp-I have to download that song, does anyone know the name of it. He sang right when I needed to hear it and I got all teary eyed.

The SWV, EnVogue, Alicia and TLC segment was the next fave but the rest, ehhhhhhhhhhh..no.

I'm losing faith in black music. Yes, I said it. Or at least the popular stuff.
  • Marvalus
@Cynthia - Wasn't the Al Green Tribute awesome!? Some good stuff right there...I am however, right there with yo about Black music...daggit...

The name of the song by Marvin Sapp: Never Would Have Made It...it has become my mantra so I know it well!

LMAO at the Cuba Gooding and SWV comments!

WHEW!!! I was scared to come over here. Didn't know how I was going to face you cause I watched the Awards, too. But, my folks twisted my arm! Really. It was on all four of our TVs - nothing else was on...really! But seeing Maxwell was worth it! When he came on, I said "oh my, Ms. Marva going to so sad she missed this!" He was great! and I'm glad you got to see him. Al of course was simply marvelous (no pun intended  ).

And he really look good! See you tomorrow for OSF!

@SjP - If only for that one portion of the show, I am SO glad that I tuned in...I would have been one upset sista had I missed that!
  • Funny stuff! I was switching channels between this and America's Got Talent. Neither could keep my attention.

I did see Cuba at the podium with other presenters. He was acting crazy with the screaming. Did you miss that?!
