Isn’t it awesome that you can identify with a song on so many levels, to so many degrees that it begins to take the shape and form of what you truly want to say to someone, or how you really feel at the moment, or even why you don’t say what you mean…

Music is one of the reasons that I’m alive…not in the literal sense, but in the sense that I am healed, and repaired, and fixed, and stronger…a song can do that much for me…a song can pump me up in the morning…a song can lull me to sleep at night…a song can get me in the mood for lovemaking (stop laughing, those of you who know my recent non-history), and can remind me of certain episodes of lovemaking (mm-hmm)…a song can help me express my anger…and can help me calm down…

Here are my 10 favorite songs at this very moment…the lists changes hour by hour, so don’t ask me tomorrow if these are still my 10 favorite, because the answer will be no…tee hee hee…songs are listed in no particular order:

  • John Mayer—In Repair (Acoustic)—JM’s voice is so beautiful it is almost hypnotic…this song, well, this song I’ve been listening to faithfully since I got laid off…although I know it was God’s will for me to be taken out of the environment I was in, it was still hard to leave behind 15 years of hard work, and truth be told, what I had let become my identity. I was “Marva, who worked at Sprint.” Who was I going to be now? Luckily, I know now (sorry for the mushy shit…) and this song helped me realize that repair was needed, necessary…even when we’re not ready, we are always “In Repair.”

I’m not together, but I’m getting there…(my favorite line from the song)…

  • Donny Hathaway—I Love You More Than You’ll Ever Know—Ooh, ooh, ooh…this is one of those “It’s raining outside, open the window, light some candles, cuddle up with the main one (or the booty call; whatever works), and throw down” songs…mmm, mmm, mmm…

I’m only flesh and blood, But I can be everything that you demand, I can be king of everythang, Or just a tiny grain of sand… (WHAT?!) (YES, YES, YES!!!)… Burning Heart

  • Stevie Wonder—You Haven’t Done Nothing—This song makes me want to DANCE! Makes me want to do the bump and knock somebody’s ass off the dance floor with all this junk in my trunk, you hear me?! With the Jackson 5 in the background, this is the BOMB! Stevie is the man!!!

We would not care to wake up to the nightmare, That’s becoming real life, But when mislead who knows a person’s mind, Can turn as cold as ice, un hum…Jackson 5, join along and say…

  • Tupac—I Ain’t Mad At ‘Cha—Now, those of you who know me, know I loves me some Pac…Pac is/was a genius…I don’t want to read anything otherwise…say something and your comments will be deleted (try me, hear?). Now, there are several songs I could have chosen from; I chose this one because it is the one that reminds me of his death…kinda morbid, huh? Pac actually rhymed the way that he lived; there was no bullshit, no made-up fictional stories for him…this dude lived and died rough…it is a sad story…R.I.P.

It seems I lost my little homie he’s a changed man, Hit the pen and now no sinnin is the game plan, When I talk about money all you see is the struggle,
When I tell you I’m livin large you tell me it’s trouble…

  • Jill Scott—Love Rain (Suite)—This is me, who I would be if God had chosen music for me…Jill is me, I am she…this WOMAN has helped me through so much shit that I could consider her my best friend, if only I knew her, you know what I mean? I mean, I used to have conversations with her CDs…I wore out her first CD from playing it so much that I had to buy a second copy…She put into words what I was feeling, she said what I couldn’t say, and she didn’t mind…I leaned and leaned and she didn’t care. Isn’t that what best friends do?

You broke me, but I’m healing; You broke me, but I’m healing; You broke me, but I’m healing…healing…healing… (That’s right, girl, you tell him; spine straight, EYE TO EYE!!!).

  • John Legend—Again—I think we’ve all had someone that we’ve had a relationship with in the past that gets under our skin, that gets ingrained into our soul and spirit that we cannot tear ourselves away from, hard as we try…that is what this song speaks to for me…That “I hate you, but I can’t let you go” syndrome…dammit! Damn Damn

Then we flashback to the first time you put your spell on me, You envelope me, you feel good as hell to me. One moment leads to another few, Here it goes again, oh, oh, Leaving you is, oh, so hard to do, I just can’t pretend, can’t pretend…

  • Elliott Yamin—A Song For You—To listen to this song (whether it’s Donny singing it or Elliott), put on a pair of headphones, close your eyes, and let your mind go…in Elliott’s case, just listen to him wrap his magical voice around these beautiful words and you will fall in love…trust me.

I love you in a place where there’s no space or time
I love you for my life you are a friend of mine…  Crying 1

  • Kanye West—Stronger—When I first heard this song (can’t remember if I saw the video first or heard the song; btw, I don’t like the video…too busy) I was like, “Whoa!” This is kinda funky! Something new, something different…wait, this must be Ye! What can we expect? I mean the boy loves to experiment and I love the fact that he thinks outside the box and lets his mind wander…

You know how long I’ve been on ya?
Since prince was on Apollonia
Since OJ had Isotoners
Don’t act like I never told ya…that boy Ye is witty!

  • Justin Timberlake—(Another Song) All Over Again—Although I love Justin when he is dancing and all that…I also love him when he’s all sensitive and tender and shit…this song touches me…proves that he can be sweet at times…there is nothing better than a love song…

I’m not a saint, I’m just a man, who had heaven and Earth
In the palm of his hand, but I threw it away
So now I stand here today asking forgiveness and if you could just please
Give me another chance, to write you another song
And take back those thing’s I’ve done

  • Jennifer Hudson—I Am Changing—This is my motto for life…There is not really much more to say…

Look at me…look…at…me…I am changing… You Go Girl

Here’s a playlist that includes all the songs listed above…enjoy!
